National Gallery Sound Art

In conjunction with the National Gallery, in London, I created a three-minute response to a painting of my choice in the Gallery's collection.

Monet depicts the water-lily pond in his garden at Giverny in Normandy, a source of inspiration for the artist in his later years. The flowers and reeds are caught in the gaze of the setting sun, which is reflected in the water along with the branches of trees on the banks.

Monet was in his late sixties when he made this painting and he had developed cataracts. Thinking about the changes in the artist’s vision and how they manifest themselves in the way he has painted this view, I also looked for a different perspective. It struck me that underwater you would see the pond in a similarly blurred way.

I chose Japanese flute’s to convey Monet’s love of his themed garden and a warm textured pad to represent the rich sunlight falling on the pond.

Trying different things out...

I've recently put a real drive into trying to get a whole range of projects to work on as well as trying out new things for myself. I had been getting a bit unmoved working solely on other peoples creative output, and began thinking that I could do something like that myself or at least be involved from the off. So in the pipeline are...

Spaghetti Stand-off.
A flash animated western that I've begun to script and also begun to fathom the use of macromedia flash 8 as the software to create it in.

here is my test.

Death by Jazz...
A 3 minute radio short about desensitisation to content if embedded in a familiar environment. Revolves around a murderer discussing their crimes whilst in a pub, and is a piece I'm going to use to test my abilities of merging two scenes together, and hopefully very subtly so the listener doesn't really pick up on the reality of the murder that is being played to them.
Audio to come soon

Snow White and the Seven... Six... Five...
Another radio piece, this time a comedy parody of Disney's "Snow White" but set in our current credit crunch climate, and like all dwarfish mining companies at this time having to lay off 4 of the 7 dwarves, but who goes will be decided by a game show. And the dwarves are not quite as Disney seemed to paint them!
Currently scripting

Asylum
A short film, written by Will Hutchinson, that is a fictional tale based around my "Urban Decay" project i did at the beginning of this year, which involved AV recordings from abandoned buildings.
We will be shooting this next week, and hopefully getting it all wrapped up within the next month. I will be acting (bit worried about that), live sound recording and post sound for the production.

check the trailer...

more stuff to come so keep checking back...

A few completed projects...

URBAN DECAY...

An AV project highlighting the derelict and abandoned buildings around London. Video was entirely original, and shot in black and white and edited so various sections can be projected on three screens simultaneously to create an AV art installation. Audio was be made almost entirely from field recordings taken on various derelict sites, and used to create a soundscape that replicates the dynamics of the video editing.

higher quality video to be uploaded soon

producer, director, sound recorder and designer.

BODY SONG...
A soundscape to an abstract animation.
This was just a piece of uni work that I had to do, was a full replacement of the audio for a film4 trailer but i quite like the final result so thought I'd share it. This is very different from the original sound that was there as i wanted to show that it all looked quite alien and space like, rather than the natural and organic style which they're sound kind of represented.

more to come...
